An August 2019 CAPS/Harris Poll showed that 67% of registered voters wanted the U.S. to face Beijing because of its trade policy, while 74% of respondents said U.S. consumers would bear most of the burden of tariffs. Mark Penn, co-director of Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll, said the poll shows strong U.S. public support for Trump`s trade policy against China, and said, „You realize that tariffs can have a negative impact on jobs and prices, but they think the fight is the right one.” Politicians and economists in mainland China are divided over the trade war. In an August 2019 NPR article, while some leaders of the People`s Republic of China argued for a quick solution to the trade war to save China`s economy, others said the country should retaliate against the United States and avoid an agreement at all costs. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the conclusion of negotiations on the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) on November 17, 2014. Australia`s Minister of Trade and Investment Andrew Robb and Chinese Trade Minister Gao Hucheng signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the signing of the agreement. The pact will most likely formalize business between countries instead of reshaping them. The R.C.E.P. eliminates tariffs on products that already qualify for duty-free treatment under existing free trade agreements. It allows countries to maintain tariffs on imports in sectors they consider to be particularly important or sensitive.
The so-called rules of origin of the pact will establish common standards as to the quantity of product to be produced in the region so that the final product can benefit from duty-free treatment. These rules could make it easier for companies to create supply chains across several countries. On December 4, 2018, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had its worst day in nearly a month, when it lost nearly 600 points, which some argue, was due in part to the trade war. On December 26, the Dow Jones rose 1,000 points after the release, according to Reuters, of a report documenting strong holiday sales, although major indexes fell by more than 10% in December 2018, in the midst of the trade war. But these victories have a high price.
